for facebook:

After a shitty 2014, this year is certainly off to a good start! This is probably the single best month for viewings of my life (save for some of the canon classic binges I did in 2010 and 2011), even though I didn’t get to see half as much as I hoped to. 25 films and only four of them were anything less than completely obsession-worthy (a French-heavy month, too, a trend that I didn’t want to jinx and still plan on continuing – halfway through Hansen-Løve’s Goodbye First Love at the moment, which’ll have to count under February’s banner). Have started some viewing projects, too – one per month from Fassbinder, Kinoshita, Ozu, Naruse and Hiroki (and Shimizu once I complete Ozu). Here are my viewings from January, ranked by letter grade:

A+
1. Elle a passé tant d’heures sous les sunlights… (1985, Garrel)
2. In a Year of 13 Moons (1978, Fassbinder)

A
3. Khrustalyov, My Car! (1998, German)
4. The Young Girls of Rochefort (1968, Demy)

5. Baxter, Vera Baxter (1977, Duras)
6. A Child in the Crowd (1976, Blain)
7. Where Is the Friend’s Home? (1987, Kiarostami)
8. Sound and Fury (1988, Brisseau)
9. Police (1985, Pialat)
10. The Enclosed Valley (1995, Rousseau)
11. The Wages of Fear (1953, Clouzot)
12. Le Horla (1966, Pollet)
13. Mauvais sang (1986, Carax)

B+
14. That Old Dream That Moves (2001, Guiraudie)
15. A Wife’s Heart (1956, Naruse)
16. Love Streams (1984, Cassavetes)
17. O Sangue (1989, Costa)
18. A New Leaf (1971, May)
19. A City of Sadness (1989, Hou)

From Facebook. February:

This was a good month! Not on the level of January in terms of quantity or quality but I saw a lot of good stuff and kept up my viewing projects nicely. The theme of this month is probably great juvenile performances, with great turns seen from Lola Créton, Kristýna Kohoutová, Charlie Wilson, Shinji Tanaka, Kengo Kōra, Jun Yokoyama, Nina Ruslanova and the kids from Metropolis. Looking forward to keeping up this level throughout the year (although January may have spoilt me).

19. Détruisez-vous
20. Acéphale

Dillinger è morto didn't make the top 20 but it's probably like #3 or #4, definitely before the #5 of this top 20 cause I don't really like that one as much as I used to anymore

I'm glad I have plenty of great films left to watch.

Birds, Orphans and Fools

@rad - have updated my post to include the other movies i loved from each year (except 1961, because it turns out that those top 10 are the only ones i really loved from what i've seen)

1968 in particular is like, the best year that's ever happened film-wise. 1 through 7 are in my top 100 ever

1960s?

1. Japan
2. Italy
3. Czechoslovakia
4. Brazil
5. USSR
6. Assorted Eastern Europe (incl. Poland, Hungary, Romania)
7. Assorted Central & Latin America (incl. Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Cuba)
8. France
9. UK
10. USA

Cool things happening in Scandinavia, Africa, Iran et al but probably not by enough directors at the same time to constitute a fruitful movement?

Absolutely. Limited availability, though. Sembene reigns supreme in terms of film availability. Not exactly a lot to pick and choose from. He's fantastic, though. Just on the outside of my list for a few years.

Even harder to find Iranian cinema pre-1970s-80s, but there are a few trickling in on KG that I've been anxious to snatch up. Quality and lack of subs are the next big hurdle.
no longer on hiatus from movies(!)

If Force Majeure is #10, then Eden must be really good.

ORRRRRRRR we have differing preferences.

Must be the former.
