Using this Random Number Generator, I generated ten random numbers between 1 and 585 (because those are the quantity of films in my favourite film list), and then listed title to number.

And then I just ranked the bunch:

535. My Winnipeg (2007)
465. Ucho (1970)
405. The Loss of Sexual Innocence (1999)
322. The Fog (1980)
264. Go, Go Second Time Virgin (1969)
227. The TV Set (2006)
182. Exotica (1994)
179. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)
155. Le départ (1967)
154. Umberto D. (1952)

Weird.

Woohoo, another Walk Hard fan.

I thought I'd hate it... only gave it a chance because I was in a masochistic mood.

I'm so glad I gave it that chance.

Anyone who's paid any kind of attention to my posting habits knows that I love a good list. I even love a bad list. I'll even make and/or enjoy lists about entirely unlistworthy things like... I dunno, colors of yarn... or deep-voiced Boyz 2 Men monologues.

You don't like Umberto Eco? I think he brings up a lot of interesting points, and I think he's an extremely well read and passionate individual who has obviously put a lot of thought into the culture of lists. You mention Tolstoy not making lists, he mentions how James Joyce utilizes it within his work. Eco does in his own fiction, and he writes beautiful fiction... What is my opinion on lists? I like them. I don't see what's crude or disdainful about them. The content and context is often more interesting then the list themselves, but that doesn't make them worthless. Our compulsion to list and organize is natural, however mysterious and compulsive it may be. They are a far more valuable tool than ratings.

Since this is a list thread, I feel the need to point out Jonathan Rosenbaum's inclusion of Tough Guys Don't Dance on his list of favorite films.

1. Bitch about your disenchantment with the thread's subject matter (or: The Wet Blanket Method)
2. Advocate the Holocaust

EDIT: Apparently I took too long to post this. The thread lives!

Why? Genocides go on ever day? Corporations make more money off employees dying than keeping them alive. Same with hospitals. Everywhere around the world dictators exist with minds more evil than you can understand.

Sick to your stomach. Why? We're killing eachother every day. Countries all around the world are still vying for nuclear technology. Religion kills more people than most natural causes combined.

We're gonna eventually kill ourselves off so why not get it over sooner than later?

In a word, I think that, far from favoring directors’ formal inventiveness, widescreen, instead, stifles it. It is, I’m more and more persuaded, if not the only, at least the main culprit for the expressive poverty of the image today. - Eric Rohmer
