They sort of cover that in the current Spider-Man books. Where they start dealing with multiple universes. So we meet older Spider-Men/Woman who are still Spiders and then they also have Spider-Kids and such.

I have often thought that it would be interesting for Parker to become middle aged or even slightly past that point, and still be trying to be Spider Man. I think DC has done that with Bruce Wayne and his alter ego. Maybe Marvel has done that -- "Aging Avengers" or some such and I haven't heard about it. And of course the aging Spider Man would want a protege, although that person wouldn't have to be either male or have spider powers. But you can easily imagine the interesting tales they could come up with if he tried to make a younger spidey out of a kid, right?
They have done the past-their-prime thing with Batman before, yes, and a really good superhero movie with that sort of concept just came out this year, even; the thing is, I doubt the generally reliable-but-still-always-playing-it-safe Marvelverse of films would ever take that big of a risk in their universe, especially with what is now arguably their most recognizable character, the one they're grooming to be the next leader of The Avengers. Even if Holland ends up sticking around in the role longer than Jackman did with Wolverine, and ages for decades naturally in real life, in their current state, I have to doubt the MCU would ever make a Spidey movie that ever deals with (or even significantly acknowledge) him having any sort of aging, mid-life superhero crisis, which is a shame, since that sort of concept has produced great superhero stories beforehand, and seems necessary to do so at a certain point in order make the genre more mature thematically and emotionally, and make sure they don't essentially just stay as popcorn entertainment for most of the whole family, y'know? I know keeping their cashcow basically the same forever has to be tempting, but the Marvel movies have gotta grow up someday, I'm hoping.

So the Marvel multiverse is covering the idea. That's a pretty good way to use a multiverse, I guess.

And I was thinking of Logan when I pondered the interesting notion of a 52-year old Peter Parker. So, maybe. In the comics.

I think Stu's right, not in the movies. I don't think they've had an old Batman in the movies, unless in the animated ones. Oh, wait. There is the TV series that's set in the future where a younger guy takes on the mantle, and Bruce is his mentor. I didn't watch all of it, though.

Nah, Holland can't stay with Spidey for that long. Spider Man might lose his panache if he got to be 35.

And, Ace, how many different alternate universe Spideys have you read? Do you get to still ply the pages of the comics? Is Miles Morales one of them? I think I've read that they're going to introduce him to the MCU in the near future...in some way. I may have only dreamed that, though. Or mis-remembered (or mis-interpreted) something that I read on IO9.

Miles has his own book and it's <3. I think they merged the Ultimate Universe with the regular universe a while back. Or at least Miles crossed over.
If you want a bunch of alternate Spider-Men/Woman, start with Spider-Verse. Introduces you to them. And a few of them get their own book. Spider-Gween is a great idea and reverses the Spidey mythos. Also that universe is so cool with a bunch of alternate history (alternate Marvel history). She also crosses over with Miles Morales, Silk, and Spider-Woman at different times. Then you have Web Warriors which is basically a bunch of Spiders teaming up to save the multiverse. I love that one too. Because it gives a few of the Spiders we met in Spider-Verse a chance to shine.

Well, yeah; that's part of the appeal of doing an "aging superhero" story in the first place. :D But in all seriousness, I don't necessarily want Marvel to do multiple films in a row that deal with a middle-aged, or even an old Spider-Man still trying to sling webs and whatnot, but I think eventually, doing at least one movie where he's dealing with aging and is doubting what he's accomplished fighting crime in NYC, and maybe he tries to groom a new protege to take his place, would be nice. The character shouldn't just be forever young like he has been to date onscreen, y'know.

Super-powers and forever young.

Aren't those two popular fantasies? :D

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

Tutoring people in English as a second language has helped me understand a great deal about the English language that I never really analyzed before. But the language I grew up learning to speak isn't the only area where I have sudden realizations.

For all my life I've been putting ice cubes into warm liquids to make them cool. For all my life I've stirred the ice cubes, and watched them melt as the sides of the glass would become colder and colder.

It never occurred to me to formulate the question, "Where does the heat energy go?" When I thought of that question a few moments ago, it tripped me up. Because I was trying to think of it in terms of physical movement. This is essentially what the discredited caloric theory was based on. The movement of a fluid, called Caloric, that carried heat, from one place to another.

When I finally realized that the heat energy doesn't go anywhere, I was able to answer my question. The heat energy merely transfers from the hotter substance, the coffee I was making into iced coffee, into the ice cubes. The heat energy doesn't change at all. In fact, its only function, if you want to call it that, is to cause a change of state. The water in the ice cubes is heated up by this transfer, attains the temperature of 0°C and becomes very cold liquid water. The heat energy to do that comes from the liquid coffee.

But in fact it doesn't go anywhere, it merely transfers from one mass to another. It is all still there in the now-iced coffee. Freaky and wonderful.

The understanding is new to my head, of course, so my explanation is not as clear in written language as it is in the wordless realm of my thoughts.

Anyone else have experiences like this?

All of that kind of reminds me of the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, which was featured in one of my favorite movies from 2016, Arrival; are you familiar with it (either the theory, or the movie), Gort?

I believe the idea was raised in both my university Cultural Anthropology, and Logic texts. But even before I reached college I wondered on my own if language somehow restricted a person's understanding of the world around them. It was gratifying to see that "greater thinkers" than I was, had also thought of the same goofy things. Kind of made me seem less weird to myself, you know?

That was one of the benefits of university studies: to learn that there were others who walked around this earth wondering things and trying to explain things. At my working-class high school I was a freak as far as most of the students were concerned, and because the teachers were pleased to have an ultra-curious student many of the other kids viewed me as a suck-up. I was so misunderstood! :D

I can't say that I am "familiar" with the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis. I'm fairly certain that I didn't retain that name for it, if it was even presented in the texts. Thanks for the link. I learned more about it than I had known (or more than I recollected, anyway).

And I have not yet had the opportunity to watch Arrival, although I've seen the trailer and I read several reviews when it came out. It looks interesting. I like it when the main characters are scientists, and when scientists of the same discipline admire the character as presented. Naturally, along with the "that's a pretty good depiction of a linguist" came all the minuscule corrections of what she would/would not have done/said.

This afternoon was spent watching Titanic (1997). Fourth viewing, I think. First in 3D.

(Theater, VHS, DVD, Blu-ray 3D. As I said, I think that's all my viewings of this one.)

It's been almost 20 years since I watched Titanic at the tender age of 10-ish, and though I don't remember much about it, I don't have all that much interest in ever watching it again (sappy love stories, man), but still, I'm curious... how did it hold up for you?

It is still highly melodramatic, overblown, factually inconsistent, too self-absorbed. The villains are too villainy, and the good people are all in steerage. The casting baffles me a little. The CGI still holds up better than I thought it would at 20 years. It's tedious and over-long.

And fun for me to watch once in a while. In this case I just wanted to see the 3D. And certain scenes are enhanced by dimensionality. Overall, though, the 3D effect in the film is subtle.

Remember, one of my favorite films is that total stinker, Reptilicus.

And I won't watch The Godfather because they cannot possibly show me anything that I had not already seen on TV and in cheesy gangster movies by 1972, when it came out.

BioSPASM once convinced me to watch Raging Bull, which suffers from the same "I've seen it all before"-ness. Overall, I was personally correct to have avoided the film for as long as I did. It is probably a great film. It is certainly well-made. But it offered me nothing that I hadn't seen on dozens of 1950's and 1960's TV shows! And I found it something to watch only once.

The famous prison movie that continues to reside at the IMDb 250's top post, had no surprises for me and was as flaccid an experience as I had ever had. But others love it. Obviously, more IMDb viewers love it than any other movie. Ever made. Ever.

So how could you value my opinion at all?

As for Titanic, there isn't another format for Cameron to port it over to, except maybe VR. How he could do that escapes me. So I might well have seen Titanic for my last time. :)

Aight!

Both my sons are working, starting tomorrow.

One for a startup company that makes a mobile game (second month in that endeavor). The other for a large company's gaming division (beginning Monday).

Yay!

Don't know the name of one of the companies (the startup). The other one isn't thought of as a game company at all. He'll be working on their gaming engine, I think. But they do have a couple of games.

Neither is EA. Neither is Visceral.

Blade Runner 2049. (2017) 3D is excellent (though a conversion) and the story is as good as the original film.

I'm up to 87 3D movies now, Ace. Did another spending binge over the holidays when so many 3D discs were on sale.

aff (away from forum)

Nice. I made the switch to only buying 4k movies. Because seomtimes it's just cheaper than buying the 3D. :(
Last 3D copy I got was when I got the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 steelbookt that came with both 4k and 3D. And that put my final tally at 45 3D movies.

Didn't even know there were a bunch of RTefugees here. Simply been involved with other things to do.

My main dig here got canceled by someone not me, more or less, and so I don't have that much to contribute at this time.

I wrote an entire thread called 13 Posts about 13 Reasons Why, but never felt like posting it. Because where would I get images for graphics, and why would I trust my graphics to some third-party place after getting Photobucketed?

So, I'm pretty much aff! :-/

I've never had a problem keeping all my images uploaded on Imgur, so you might want to consider switching to them. At any rate, it's good to see you here again, even if it does turn out to be just a quick return; hopefully, you'll be in the mood to be more of a regular again, someday!

Initially, I didn't have any problem with Photobucket. And that's what makes me feel a bit depressed over the whole thing. The avatar you see to the left is currently parked at Imgur, which lets you know that I have an account there.

I started including more graphics because Trip Zone at RT observed that an essay I had posted was "a big wall of text" and I thought, Yeah, some graphics would divide it up nicely.

And as you know, I used ImageShack at that time. And, as you also know, Jedi had the sage advice of steering me to Photobucket in 2011 when I wanted to restart the RemakeRematches. For several years that worked really well. They don't compress the images beyond the jpg compression you might assign to them, and I made all mine png format which is less compressed. The fetch process worked swiftly getting the images in place from the PB site.

I was perfectly happy. I was also happy to pay them $20 a year for two years, and $35 for the 2017-2018 span to have higher-traffic (unlimited) hot-linking.

You know what came of all that. And I don't have any guarantee that the guys and gals at Imgur won't ever hatch such an outrageous idea in the future! That's why the only image on my Imgur account is that one avatar for Gort.

I could load all 3,000 images in the Remake Rematch thread to the Corrie server, but that might start costing our fantastic hosts more money per month or year. Don't want to do that to them. And I noticed during the PB meltdown that they never (at least in a place where I saw it) invited people to park their imagery on the Corrie server!

To me, a lot of words without pictures is dull and confusing to parse, so I wouldn't want to start any other threads with just a pic here and there. I'm equally visual and verbal, so the two come together in my mind rather naturally. I'm not as good with graphics as Jedi and some others are, obviously, but I tried to make the Rematches both interesting to look at and to read.

I guess a few people are trying to beat the deadline when the PhotoBucket hammer falls on 13 Feb 2018 and there are only thousands of place-holders decorating the RR thread! The daily average page views has been hovering around 1,300 per day for a while. That could be two people reading the entire thread and following links, or it could be 1,300 people logging in and reading from page 1 to page 47. I have no idea.

I still regret that I didn't take a couple of hours out of my visiting with friends in Memphis while you were at U of M over New Year's break, I think (it's been years, now) and come visit you on the campus when you invited me to do so. I should have gone to meet Stuart Little. But I thought something was going down with the family that I was visiting, and that there wouldn't be time. There would have been. There are no do-overs in real life, but I still think about that once in a while (now being one of those times, apparently).

That means the only RT poster I ever met in person was BaccardiJim while he was still alive. At least, I read that he had a heart attack and passed, over at RT. Could be a mere rumor as far as I know. But the liquor store where he worked was razed and I guess he lost his job there. It is difficult to continue going to work when the building where you work is gone.

Anyhow, if anyone could persuade me to return as a more frequent poster, or even a more frequent lurker, it would be you, Stu.

Yep. He worked in the town I live in, at a liquor store on Cantrell Road east of Mississippi Street. My sons were visiting from California where they worked at Blizzard Entertainment in those days. He wanted to meet me, but also to see them. So it was in the holiday season some time after 2007 and before 2011. The arrangement was that he would get off at 11pm and the four of us would go somewhere for drinks (the kids were adults by then) and a nice long visit.

When we showed up a bit before 11pm he sadly told me that someone had not shown up for work, so he had to close the store. That meant he'd either have to close up shop at 1am and it would take him until 2am to be ready to leave, or he closed at 2am and it would take him until 3am to be done (I don't remember those particulars). At any rate, we weren't able to go sit down and visit.

My sons and I hung out at the store for about 45 minutes. Jim showed us some of the specials they had, and the younger son bought a few bottles of things for the holiday festivities at their grandmother's house. We eventually left the store to Jim and his underling. As I recall he was one of the managers, perhaps only an assistant manager, but trapped there that night by his position.

We talked about RT personalities, and things that we both liked, and things that only one of us liked. And my sons' jobs. And my video business and a few other things. I never managed to connect up with him for the sit-down drink and talk session, but at least I got to set eyes on and shake hands with one real live RT denizen. I think he had met at least one other RT poster in person. No memory of which one(s).

Aw, thanks. But that time would have been really fun. We could have walked around on the U of M campus, and I could have shown you the buildings and even some of the rooms where I had classes. And the dorm towers I had lived in.

We may never be in the same town at the same time again...unless we plan on it, of course.

We got tipsy at a hidden cocktail bar and had sex in front of a giant mirror in our eurotrash hotel room so it was still a good night.

I liked The Three Musketeers (2011) by Paul W. S. Anderson when I first saw it in 2D. Just watched the 3D version and it's many times better. Plus, I bought a used copy so it was not only a good 3D watch, it was a cheap acquisition. :)

I hear the last few movies WS Anderson made were essential in 3D.

I've seen 7 of his films. Musketeers is the latest. I haven't seen the 3D Resident Evil films, only the first one.
People say that Pompeii is lifeless even though the 3D is good. Have you seen the film?

If anyone is interested in seeing the images in the Remake Rematch thread, there are only two days left, if what Photobucket told me in an extortion email last summer is true.

On Tuesday (or maybe Wednesday) morning i expect them to be replaced with Photobucket placeholders.

Forever.

Well, I have an Imgur account. The avatar I use for RT is the only thing on it right now. If the Gort av here disappears I'll post it to Imgur and re-link, or just put it on The Corrie.

There are over 3000 images in the Rematch thread, my friend.

I would have to re-link every single instance to the new location for each image on Imgur.

That cannot be automated.

It would take weeks.

And I would probably fall asleep while doing it. :D

Post Re: The Crew - If you think you're part of it, then you are.

Remember, the 3000+ images would be uploaded to a different server, which would generate a new URL for each image. For some there are hundreds of placements, but for most of them there is only one appearance!

My programmer sons tell me that you can't automate just everything. For example, I wanted them to write a program that would sort out all the individual tags in an epub so that I could select one and change all instances of it to a standard tag.

My older son told me how it could be accomplished, even with the automated program, and it was just as convoluted as sorting by hand one at a time the way I had been. Since we don't have access to an AI system, you'd basically have to tell it what tags to look for, then it would go report back to you...what you already know.

Same with the URLs for the images. In order to identify the image to replace you'd have to have an array of all image names already in place, then have it search for instances of each one. Then put in the new URL instead of the old.

I'm told it would take as long to write the program to do that (once again, in the absence of AI) as it would take to do the reconstruction by hand.

Computers are faster than humans, but they are relatively stupid.

A video equipment salesman once tried selling me a new tape machine controller for my A/B/C roll editing system in Memphis. He told me it was 10 times faster than any PC-based editing controller to date. I replied, "In my experience the slowest thing in the edit suite is the human entering the numbers. So having the computer work 10 times as fast wouldn't really gain you much time."

He stopped trying to sell me the faster editing controller. Ha ha!

Okay, for the most part the images in all my threads are now replaced by an "image unavailable, click for images" ... image. And if you click on it it returns, beeecause Pho-bucketful won't let you in from here.

But the images that are in my browser cache still display! Natch.

Shame I discovered this today. Otherwise I could have informed my one or two hardcore fans (I flatter myself that there are that many) to quickly go through the entire 47 page thread, and then don't clear their browser cache...ever...in order to retain all the images that I put up in the thread over the years.

:D

I mean, that might have worked. The images only amount to a few hundred MB of space.

When I first learned this disappearing act was going to happen back in July 2017, I went through all sorts of mental versions of "saving the Remake Rematch thread" scenarios. One was to put it up on my website as HTML, with all the images local on my URL. Then link from each content post here to the HTML content at trxbooks.com.

And then the total insanity of that made me laugh. Aloud. It was a genuine LOL moment.

Frankly, I don't trust any free photo-parking lot to keep my vehicles in place forever. Photobucket just sent all the hotlinks to the car smasher. Imgur can drop images that aren't accessed frequently enough.

And linking to all the images if they were in a folder at trxbooks would require spending the rest of my life editing BBcode. AGAIN! :-/
