The man is an artist. I also wonder if he is going to keep heading in a political direction as his last 2 films are very focused on that plus social commentary. Although all of his movies are kind of political in their own ways. He is one of my favorite modern directors.
1. Casablanca (1942, Curtiz) 2. The Lobster (2015, Lanthimos) 3. Before Midnight (2013, Linklater) 4. Lost in Translation (2003, Coppola) 5. Psycho (1960, Hitchcock) 6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004, Gondry) 7. The Red Turtle (2016, Dudok de Wit) 8. Fight Club (1999, Fincher) 9. The Incredibles (2004, Bird) 10. The Night of The Hunter (1957, Laughton)
This list is actually very representative of my taste. Casablanca might actually be my number one movie of all time. There are also multiple "talking heads" films, my favorite genre. As well are dark comedies, so I'm very happy with both Fight Club and The Lobster. And to be honest, Psycho is a black comedy too I'm also pleased with the two animated features (drawing is my greatest passion, besides cinema of course) and to finish, an odd one, The Night of The Hunter. Yep, this was fun

Re: Lists Lists Lists
Small, belated list of everything I watched in August:
1. WALL·E (Stanton, '08, 10 out of 10 score) 2. War For The Planet Of The Apes (Reeves, '17, 8.5) 3. Logan Lucky (Soderbergh, '17, 8) 4. Detroit (Bigelow, '17, 8) 5. The Fugitive (Davis, '93, 8)
This was my 3rd time watching WALL-E, but my first watch since the year it came out, and it was just as magical experience now as it was back then; it's probably my favorite Disney movie period, to be honest. A review of it is incoming someday. Anyway, this was my 2nd time watching The Fugitive, but my first viewing in at least 15 years, because, while I remember it having a couple of memorable action setpieces (the train crash!), besides that, I felt it failed to distinguish itself overall from other thrillers. However, while the main conspiracy plot is still generic and undercooked, the chase was better than the catch this time, as Andrew Davis did a good job of making it feel like Kimble was always THIS close to being caught at all times, which made it a pretty fun, suspenseful ride this time around, so it's definitely improved in my esteem.
10. Your Name (counting this as 2017 since it was given a formal theatrical release outside the requisite LA/NY Oscar screenings in April of this year) 9. Colossal 8. Good Time 7. The Florida Project 6. Lady Bird 5. Get Out 4. Dunkirk 3. Lady Macbeth 2. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 1. Blade Runner 2049
Some of these are in kind of loose order (particularly #6-8).
Here's the full list of all 19 movies I've seen so far from this year, on my alphabetically-ordered list (I'll post the final, ranked list sometime in January): https://letterboxd.com/stusmallz/list/2 ... ed/detail/ The next thing I'm looking to catch in theaters is Three Billboards, sometime this week; can't wait!
This is my Top 5 of new films seen during my power-less months after Hurricane Maria...
1. Nocturnal Animals 2. Get Out 3. Deepwater Horizon 4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 5. Kong: Skull Island

Re: Lists Lists Lists
I'm going to start posting my full best-of-2017 list in January, but the best older movies I saw for the first time this year were (in order of preference):
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Gravity Total Recall The World's End Ant-Man What We Do in the Shadows
I'll quite possibly review the top 3 on that list someday, too. Anyway, the biggest disappointments from previous years that I saw for the first time this year (starting with the worst) were:
Batman Vs. Superman Suicide Squad A History Of Violence (review in progress) Thor: The Dark World Police Story Snowpiercer Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome Thor
And finally, my best rewatches of older movies this year were:
And oh yeah, and I rented/made multiple theater trips to rewatch Logan, Spider-Man: Homecoming, & Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so there's that, too. All in all, I watched/rewatched a lot more older movies than I realized this year; I went to the theater a lot more since I moved into town last December, so I probably watched less older movies this year than I did the last, but I still apparently found plenty of time to catch up with the older releases, so I'm pretty satisfied with the balance between new and older films I saw this year, I think.
I wasn't a big fan of this one (being generous), but given your predilection for Warhol/60s and lost girl tales, have you seen the Edie Sedgwick film Ciao! Manhattan?
I saw it years ago when I was first getting into cult cinema. I wasn't really crazy about, but I also went into it hoping it would be so mind blowingly awesome that life would never be the same. Thought about rewatching it but not something I'd really consider a priority. I did like the b&w scenes however.

Those are the most glamorous, before the rot set in.
In addition to having problems with Factory Girl's historical liberties, I think that Guy Pierce is a weak Warhol. If I were to rank the best, he would fall well behind Crispen Glover, David Bowie, Jared Harris, John Cameron Mitchell and Bill Hader.

Why are we talking about Factory Girl, when the glory that is Carny is staring us in the face from the number 12 spot?

That's close to where that would stand on my own personal top 30, so to me that is a given. Of course Blood of Dracula is top 10 shit. Everyone should know this. The rest of the world just needs to get in fucking line.
Carny though, while not remotely making any kind of "Top" list I would ever compile, is such an neglected, ugly duckling, unappreciated movie, I can't help but be happily surprised at it showing up on anyone's favorite list.
I only wish that my image server was working tonight so I could cram that nightmare poster down all of your throats one last time.

I'll be honest with you, I've never quite loved Taxi Driver; I still feel that it's a very good, vivid urban drama, but just a bit too low-key of an experience in general to quite have the sort of effect that it's "supposed" to have on me. If we're talking Schrader/Scorsese collabs, I definitely have to prefer the raw emotion of Raging Bull to it, though it's still a fine film on its own.

Thnx, Thief. To be honest with you, I'm way overdue for a rewatch of Return Of The Jedi, as it's been a good decade since I last watched it, and I never really had a good handle what on my true feelings about it were, but Google's selling every single SW for $20 a pop, and refusing to let us just rent it, so that doesn't help. Someday, eh?
There is only ONE trilogy. The rest of Star Wars movies don't count in my book. I still haven't seen TLJ but if it's as bad as Force Awakens or as mediocre as Rogue One it still won't count.
Oh yeah and the prequels are non-existent in my universe.

While it probably has zero chance of holding up if I ever were to watch it again (which I probably won't) Jedi has always been my favorite (very closely followed by New Hope). Is this because it is a good movie? Probably not. But for me the entirety of the Star Wars universe revolves around Jabba's palace. Having the opening of that movie center almost exclusively around that, was like giving me a half hour long Cantina scene, which was all I ever asked for from George Lucas. That's the kind of shit that afforded an 8 year old me a proper reason to live.

A New Hope The Empire Strikes Back Return of the Jedi Rogue One The Force Awakens The Last Jedi Revenge of the Sith The Phantom Menace Attack of the Clones
I'll echo Crumb's sentiment that Clones is the only complete turd in the series. Phantom is pretty shitty, but the Darth Maul fight hides some of the odour.
