Post Corrie Class Trip 2.0: #10 Aksuat

Aksuat
Serik Aprimov
Kazakhstan, 1999

Set in the village where Aprimov was raised, the story involves two brothers –
Kanat, who left for the city long ago, and Aman, who stayed behind. When
Kanat brings his pregnant wife home for a visit, the stage is set for bleak farce.
Just after the baby is born, Kanat is jailed for fighting, forcing Aman to care
for mother and child despite the disapproval of the village.

I was looking for a film with kids in danger to lure Jedi, but all I found was one that didn't have any danger and looked boring, so. Can't go wrong with Kazakhstan, though, right?

I guess this is another one of those dark comedies that's too dark for me to see the comedy. Kazakhstan humor must be even harder edged than Finnish humor. But, this poor guy! Everyone turns on him, for almost no reason, even (or especially) his not-so-loyal sidekick. Maybe his mistake is not defending himself early on; when he does try to (literally) fight it, it's too late. It's telling that, when he finally gets fed up, he can't even yell and bluster properly, he's so unaccustomed to it. I wish I'd seen a better copy, but I think they did pretty great things with color and no-budget lighting. Aman's house always looked like the most inviting place in the village. Better subtitles would have helped, too. "I am like in the movie with you"? Pretty sure Last Tango in Paris is the furthest thing possible from their situation!

What was the deal with the rock on the string? Was it just to be mean, or was it an attempt to scare her away?

All the night scenes and some darker interiors looked pretty great. I tried really hard to appreciate it as a snowbound Koker trilogy and enjoy the humor and hybridization of modernity and feudal-level agri-shit civilization but ultimately it just wants to keep reaching for this symbolic plotical allegory I don't know or care about the specifics of, foregoing its cinematic potential for topical concerns that could just as easily be journalism, theater or a pamphlet.

Hmm. Are you assuming the character of the old man is merely allegory? I assumed that a structure around a 'village strongman' was realistic for that region, so I thought he fit. Or, maybe I'm missing your point completely...

yeah him and the other locals(/relatives?) in comparison to the first guy and his wife returning there and the possibilities for their family, I didn't feel any of it was ever only allegory/symbolism or contrived, it was always organic, but to a narrative that was mostly just undigested tradition-versus-progress cliche applicable to almost anyone anywhere, so any uniqueness to the culture/region is ultimately subsumed in lame attempts at universal Meaning and/or Moral

compare/contrast w/ something like Sembene's stuff where narrative is also used symbolically(and critically) but without blunting the more specific characteristics achievable when coming from a non-Western production method

Does that make sense?

Yes, of course. But Sembene seems like a really high standard to hold this guy to! I agree the story is weak, but its weakness is in making its protagonist completely perfect and everyone else completely horrible. I have no idea what kind of point that would be making about tradition vs. progress, or universal truths. Unless he's trying to say the innocent villagers have all been corrupted by filthy lucre, and that's just silly.

I'm watching this now. Wigwam would you like to take the next one? I want to do 12 just for symmetry with round 1 and I can take the finale. then I guess we're done with Class Trip for the meantime! I've gotta say this round has been more consistent than last year's

It's not too late to watch this one and weigh in. Is "farce" an accurate description? Is "allegory"? Don't break my heart, Corrierino!

I didn’t pay much attention to the story. It seemed to mumble along. Some of the music was nice, although rare. Visually it ranged from barely coherent to beautiful, with the latter shots being the definite highlight for me. The tripod seemed to have one leg shorter than the others.

Haha, I didn't even notice this, but yeah. Those interiors, though! <3

I wish the city brother hadn't disappeared so quickly. The relationship dynamics were a lot more interesting to me than the police investigation or movie making subplots.
