Are we against people watching this much sooner, that is, posting thoughts much sooner? I guess I could watch it, write shit down but wait.

I don't know why the rules are as they are, but I guess we should try to stick with them, since they've been consistent for 4 trips already.

So then, we have to wait a week to watch it? This is the first time I'm participating so am not familiar with the rules.

Just to discuss it, you must wait. Can watch whenevs.

The seed of the idea was to have everyone post their thoughts on the same day so no one went into the film with specific expectations gained from reading another user's criticism, plus it is just more fun to do it all at once and it seems more discuss-y, even if we haven''t had the levels of participation I'd hoped for.

Post Re: Corrie Class Trip #5: The Perfume of the Lady in Black ('74)

This was a pleasant enough watch, not exactly superlative. The entire thing is put together very classily with gorgeous colour and stylish compositions and good-looking actors, but there's a major energy problem and the entire thing just sort of shudders along to an expected climax which doesn't really make the conspiracy and descent-into-insanity elements more than tangentially related to one another. Maybe the entire thing is too sterile for too long, or the ways Barilli exorcises tension are too rote, or maybe Mimsy Farmer just isn't such an engaging heroine. It just seems like a good-looking but relatively ordinary addition to its genre to me, and it is hard to dig beneath the surface - Farmer hallucinating the murder of the three men who had objectified her and ultimately becoming a commodity in the most gruesome of ways points towards the seed of an interesting feminist analogy but ultimately feels like an afterthought.

Post Re: Corrie Class Trip #5: The Perfume of the Lady in Black ('74)

Snapper, may want to throw a spoiler warning in front of your post - it's not Saturday for everyone yet. Some might have not seen the film yet.

That said, dem spoilers - addressing your post, Snap.

It's definitely sterile, but not without purpose - that's something I think that kind of falters at least in the english dub of the film - for those who watched it there. The feminist subtexts are considerably stronger than you suggest - it's a film that for its genre, often characterizes violent action and the typically masculine traits with a sense of blindness, and repulsion to them - Yet Parker's character is often typically feminine - fitting into the role assigned, and that seems to be the cause of her slip into killing the victims, how they seem to force her further into a very typical role after her mother's suicide - once highly independent, working in a role hardly typical of women in the 70's, suddenly cramped into her dead mother's house for a majority of the film's duration.

Whether it works or not, is something I think that's up for more debate - it works more often than not for me, I liked the film a lot more the last time I saw it than this time - but I was considerably more in tune with giallo's various ticks and cliches last time as well, this was a bit of a clearer viewing, the pace and tension can certainly be problematic to the film at times, the ending arriving as something of a formality.

There's still enough here to like - the subtexts are interesting, albeit underdeveloped in its English dubbed iteration I feel, and the colors are sensuous, the framing handsome enough to carry the film's lulls - not quite as enthusiastic about the film as last time, but still plenty of stuff that's of interest about this.

Post Re: Corrie Class Trip #5: The Perfume of the Lady in Black ('74)

I'm right with you snapper, it's very limp and I was rather bored throughout. I thought its (non)investigation into her traumatised psyche was, well, incoherent. There seemed to be a number of sources that had an effect on her (father missing??, whore mother, sexual objectification, fucking voodoo witchcraft, the paranoia of voodoo witchcraft and all these things), and ultimately it either articulates that it is all these things, or it fails to articulate anything but its gruesome blunt metaphor of everyone wanting a piece of her (which was when I finally came around to this, slightly). I appreciate that it went for something more than a pulpy mystery, but yeah it's pretty baffling and its atmosphere/suspense scenes are pretty poor.

It's like Rosemary's Baby without the one thing that makes that film so indelible: its direction. Some great shots, though. That one underneath the glass table!

I had to watch the English dub for lack of subs. Pity to hear about something lost in translation, das.

I downloaded a version that had both, but watched it in English as the general mix seemed to sound better.

This was just bad, honestly. None of it makes any sense, and unlike with an Argento giallo (for instance), there's not nearly enough visual inventiveness to make up for that.

There's a fucking ten-second scene where the main character buys blackberry jam and forgets to pay for it. Riveting stuff.

Oh wait, her younger self enjoyed it, so she had to buy it. And we had to see her buy it, because otherwise we never would have learned that she's losing her mind, and that a symptom of insanity is harmless forgetfulness.

Honestly though, that scene reminded me a lot of Johnny buying flowers in The Room

It's hard to say what she's imagining and what she isn't, because there's no real POV in the film. If anything, the entire thing becomes our own, not particularly creepy hallucination, where every horror cliche known to man is thrown at the celluloid to distract us from the fact that there's no actual theme and no suspense.

Apparently the director claims that "horror movies never make any sense", so I suppose he could have made this film solely to provide a source for a critical essay he never got around to writing.

Not your fault, Trip! I thought it'd be good, too.

Bandy you stomped on the enjoyment I did have of this horribly.

Bastard.

It's got some interesting things that frustratingly don't translate over into the english dub at all - but thinking back on it again, there's a lot of weird directorial choices I just overlooked. Now I can't stop thinking on that jam scene.

Post Re: Corrie Class Trip #5: The Perfume of the Lady in Black ('74)

Haha, sorry. I think if this film were cheesier, it might have some of the Troll 2 enjoyment factor, but most of it is remarkably serious and yet still nonsensical, so I found more to legitimately hate.

I did like the scene with the "psychic", though. There's something interesting and disturbing about the violation of a person's memories.

The mother was the lady in black and she was spraying perfume at one point.

I don't remember the jam scene at all!

Colours rescue this from total horridness, as do certain scenes such as the psychic one or the pretty harrowing rape scene. But yeah, lol, every cliche in the book and every one presented with po-faced seriousness.

Aight, I'll pick one and make the thread this Saturday!

We've had trips from Czechoslovakia, Japan, Portugal, the USSR and Italy
and from the 40s, 60s, 2000s, 80s and 70s. So I guess I'll steer clear of those countries and decades.
