That friendly against Mexico is the worst I've seen Argentina play in years. Christ.

Thankfully, we have Messi.

I wish local journalists would stop insisting so much on the need for Tevez and Messi to play together. They have never done so to any fruitful end and they never will. I don't know why, they just don't mix. They didn't the first time I saw them together, in that horribly boring World Cup 2006 draw against Holland, and they don't now.

The more or less Dutch documentary Around the World in 50 Concerts by Heddy Honigmann, that I watched tonight. And the poor cropping was done by me to get rid of watermarks on the screener.

There's an expression in Argentina, "pan triste," which translates as "sad bread."

That was the Argentine team yesterday, a sad slice of bread.

Haha!

It was so depressing. I have not seen so much nothing since I moved into my current apartment a few years ago. And in that case at least I knew things would change when I bought furniture.

But what's gonna change with the Argentine team? Sheer nothingness. Let's upload the match to your Isolation thread.

Post Re: The Continuing Football Season 2014/15

The four offensive players against Paraguay might be: Tevez, Lavezzi, Di Maria, and Correa.

No playmaker. No center-forward. A bunch of short guys who usually stand far from the box. The tallest dude there, Di Maria, is the guy whose main skill is centering the ball, not heading it in. That means Tevez, Correa, and Lavezzi are left to do the honors. Hilarious.

Against Ecuador the playmaker was Mascherano. That tells you all you need to know.

I refuse to believe I know more about the sport than an internationally-recognized coach like Martino. But...

I'm almost forced to consider conspiracy theories, like the one that suggests Messi's picking the squad based on friendship. Which I think is a stupid idea, but actually less stupid than the bizarre formations on the pitch.

God, that sucked.

Without Messi these guys are a fucking joke. Maybe people will stop bitching about Messi now that we've witnessed Messi-less Argentina.

Good game for River's newbies, Kranevitter and Funes Mori, though.

I mean cuz 24 countries qualify, and finishing nr. 3 in a group was enough to qualify or go the play-off matches... Albania, Austria, Wales, Slovakia, Northern Ireland and Iceland have qualified directly...

It's been an odd one.

I don't believe that Wales deserve this "golden generation" tag that you might apply to Belgium right now, but they've done very well to qualify. Northern Ireland even more so. Lots of dark horses in this year's tournament!

i was right, and could it be any more perfect than that twat scoring an own goal to cap it off?
that said, holland were the best thing about the 2008 euros by far, and i rooted for them to beat spain in 2010, so i hope they can replace the outgoing players by the world cup, as unlikely as that appears
it's funny how the expanded tournament actually made the qualification more exciting with smaller teams appearing to be more up for it, as many people have already observed. hopefully the same will fly for the tournament itself, although it's weird that we'll have 10 days of football to get rid of a third of the teams

I don't think anyone involved in inventing soccer ever thought about the eventuality of a player grabbing another's arm and beating his own head with it.

Post Re: The Continuing Football Season 2015/16

Last Sunday’s Club World Cup final between River and Barcelona was a joke. It’s becoming increasingly difficult, if not impossible, for South American teams to compete with their European pairs. The economic gulf between them is so vast that’s it’s hardly a competition anymore. This has nothing to do with the actual quality of South American players, because Barcelona depends on them to score goals. But South American teams can’t hold on to their own players, unless they peak late into their careers. And even then, since they’re already old, they’re close to their eventual decline. So their peak doesn’t last long. That’s what happened to River since winning (or even before winning) the Libertadores: old dogs past their 30s who hit their peaks at the right moment (Sanchez, Ponzio) dropped their level; somewhat younger (though not super young) stars were sold off to Europe or Mexico (Rojas, Teo Gutiérrez, Funes Mori); and, basically, what was left was a middling River team that hasn’t won a thing these last six months to confront the best Barcelona team in history and, possibly, one of the best teams ever in general. Some say: don’t excuse River's subpar performance. But it’s not a question of excuses, it’s a question of reality. And this reality is affecting national teams as well: it’s no coincidence the last World Cup winners were essentially incubated in European club teams like Barcelona and Bayern Munich that can actually hold on to their squads and pay for rising and stable talent (not just weathered heroes and teenage upstarts). South American teams have to catch lightning in a bottle, a perfect amalgam of young talent that has yet to be exported, old veterans who can lead the youngsters, and late-peakers who haven’t started to decline yet. And they have to hold on to them all for, you know, a couple of months, at least, to win a Libertadores and, maybe, the damn Club World Cup. For reference, the now defunct Intercontinental Cup, in which the Libertadores and Champion’s League winners used to meet, was not so dominated by Europe. South American teams could still offer a challenge back then and very often won. But that’s now a dream.

Saviola left River after coming back, playing a bunch of games, and missing a lot of goals. He means to play elsewhere now, but he's obviously close to retirement. That man had one underwhelming career considering how he started out.

can someone put me out of my misery? i hate fans who turn on their teams so i don't really know what to do anymore. i mean, we're 3rd, our rivals keep dropping points, and we're almost injury-free (by arsenal's standards), so what the fuck is going on?
ps. obviously, there's nothing to 'do', really, it's more of a figure of speech. i could go outside and try talking to some people instead of caring, but who wants that, right?
