Different environment when it came to finances and talent though.

I guess no one.

I'm not looking forward to likely Messi-less Argentina tonight against Chile, the hardest rival in our group. Even with Messi they've been awful.

Then again, being awful didn't keep them from playing (although admittedly losing) the last World Cup and Copa America finals.

Argentina vs. USA tonight. The underwhelming vs. the underdog. Who will win? Nobody knows.

Turns out Argentina won. USA forgot they were playing. They just went to watch Messi.

And now half the team is quitting, too, including Messi?

Presumably. It remains to be seen whether or not they'll actually go through with it.

The problem: Argentina almost never loses, but its attacking line can't score in decisive matches.

The solution: Hire a coach who specializes in defence.

Post Re: The Continuing Football Season 2015/16

The bizarre spectacle of Juan Sebastián Verón, president of Estudiantes, coming back from retirement to lead the team, while still president, at 41, or 42 in two months. Estudiantes isn't some second division team, either. It's playing this year's Copa Libertadores. So there are some important, difficult matches ahead. I didn't see yesterday's friendly, in which he presumably did alright. And I understand his "thing" is his passing game, which is reportedly intact. But the man can't play standing still, can he? That said, I will do everything in my power to catch his first official performance. I was a big fan of him during his return to Estudiantes late in the aughts, when he regained the pace he lost in his depressing, post-Manchester European adventures.

Weirdly I remember him as the architect of that famous Argentinian 42-touch passing goal at the 2006 WC, but apparently he wasn't selected for that tournament.

Yeah, he wasn't part of that team, but he did nab the World Cup passing record against Greece in the 2010 edition. I don't know if anyone's beat his mark of 133 correct passes since then. He was unbearably slow back in Inter, which is when I started watching European football, and he was even slower when he disembarked in Estudiantes, in 2006. But somewhere along the line he was born anew, and in a few months the man was running everywhere on the pitch, defending, slide-tackling, sending his trademark long passes, and eventually leading his team to a Copa Libertadores victory (and, very nearly, a Club World Cup, with treble-winning, circa-2009 Barcelona equalizing with minutes left on the clock and eventually turning the final around in overtime with a weird Messi chest-goal). He displayed a dynamism that, I assume, would've shocked Manchester United fans, who apparently remember him as lazy and sluggish. Still, as energized as he might be by his childhood team, the man's 41 now. And he had already retired! And he's president of the damn club! We'll see what happens.

In an age where Russians and Chinese billionaires are turning football into their ego playground by buying up clubs, that's kinda weirdly exciting.

I don't know what's more historic, Barcelona's turnaround or PSG's epic choke.

Paris Saint-Germain is one of France's most well-known clubs. Not sure what you mean by "favored," but they had won the first leg 4-0. All they had to do at Camp Nou was not concede 4 goals. At the 85th minute, after a pretty sloppy match, they were down 3-1. But that still meant Barcelona had to score 3 more goals with 5 minutes left on the clock (plus stoppage time). And of course they did and won 6-1 (or 6-5 on aggregate).

Somehow even more embarrassing than watching Arsenal get battered 10-2 on aggregate.
