Post Re: Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai

I saw Shyam Benegal's Junoon recently. I liked it. I liked the depiction of gender roles and the reversal of power against the colonial/rebellion setting, and some of visuals (from the nightmare sequences) were pretty compelling (although the terrible quality of the transfer hurt them somewhat). I also liked that there was a real sexual menace to Shashi Kapoor's character - the film didn't downplay the rapey-ness of his character or the situation he enforces. I need to see more from Benegal. Aside from this I've only seen his documentary on Satyajit Ray (called, surprisingly, Satyajit Ray), and found it very informative.

haven't seen that one unfortunately but have it bookmarked now. I've only seen Manthan, Mandi, Ankur and Bhumika and remember them all being pretty strong. It's been several years since I watched those first 3 though.

will need to learn tamil to see the remainder of mani's films, i think. in the meantime, will just watch thalapathi on an endless loop.

I always thought Nayakan was better but haven;t seen either of those in years..

the lack of fish sex is disappointing. even more disappointing is your absence overall and how that has resulted in me watching zero indian films in 2014. all the blame is on you.

The non-action heroes before him, whether Rajesh Khanna or Rajendra Kumar, were men who were simply in touch with their emotions, the way poets and drunks are. All credit to Vidya Balan, to swearing Rani (those fucking eyes), to the Tehelka-reading urban bourgeoisie, and to the pop-radical power of Rang De Basanti. (I already knew that last bit.)

Sort of like a cross between a Johnnie To comedy (no Wai Ka-Fai metaphysics, though), and one of those 70s French black comedies I dimly remember. Loved it, obviously. (maybe my fave Indian film for 2013?)

Teesri Kasam | Basu Bhattacharya | 1967

God. Close to perfection. That road trip at the start was so good. Just driving and talking and singing and stopping and eating and on and on. 45 minutes was too short. Then, at the fair, the changed gender dynamics. The innocent male gaze of Kapoor replaced by multitudes of men, with an unsettling mix of desire, veneration and predation. Rehman retorts to the local zamindar “In your eyes I am a prostitute. In their eyes, I am a Goddess.” Since it stars Kapoor, we all know what happens in the end. Bless him.

Also, Waheeda. Couldn't help myself.
