Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
hope this is an okay thread for questions is there a rip of Text of Light of better quality than this? http://www.ubu.com/film/brakhage_light.htmlI know a better alternative would be to look for a screening. or wait for a hypothetical third Brakhage set by Criterion.

This is the first I've heard of an extended edition! Has anyone here seen it yet?

Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
got another question: I have a video of Bertolucci's The Spider's Stratagem and it is from a TV airing running 94 minutes. meanwhile the VHS runs 100 minutes (some sources saying 97 or 98 minutes). does anyone know off hand if the TV airing has anything cut out or if the video could just have a bit of PAL speed-up? otherwise I'll try to look for a rip of the VHS. I couldn't find anything documented about this. thanks!
EDIT: I found a 98 minute length video on Vimeo with the last 4 minutes just black. so maybe that answers my question on why my video is 94 minutes i.e. that stuff edited out.

Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
I hope to soon find out!
I get very particular about finding the most complete version though it is likely, especially with some of these lesser-known movies, that the run-time info on imdb isn't 100% exact.

Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
I'm back. Is there a 143 minute cut of Ghatak's Subarnarekha out there or only the 128 minute cut? Worldcat says yes on the former unless the DVD they are citing is mislabeled. (I know it is likely the missing footage fell victim to the CBFC)
Thanks in advance!

Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
random shot in the dark but does anyone have a good English subtitle file for The Indian Tomb (the Fritz Lang movie)? all of the files I've been able to find are all out of whack (i.e. even just doing a synchronization in vlc only fixes some of the problems); I'll probably just end up editing the srt file a few minutes a day so I can fix it, it's just going to be dull work.
I know I can just watch it dubbed into English but it is a German film and I intend to watch it in German!

Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
I can't help with the subtitle business, but the DVDs I watched of The Tiger of Eschnapur and The Indian Tomb were of reasonable quality, in case you're able to get ahold of them. (Although they might be out of print, in which case I'm just rubbing salt on your wound.)

I'll probably just end up fixing the subtitles line-by-line. it's not ideal but this is what separates the men from the boys.

Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
two other requests (or if anyone has any info)
has The Puppetmaster by Hou Hsiao-Hsien ever been released in home video in the correct aspect ratio? otherwise I'll have to wait for a proper release somewhere down the line.
also I know that Dark Eyes by Nikita Mikhalkov has been released as a full-screen VHS and as a widescreen DVD with a permanent commentary track over the audio. is there a file floating around the 'Net with the DVD picture dubbed with the VHS audio? I swear I'm not a Russian bot.
thanks in advance

Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
not a director's commentary but Mikhalkov acting as a narrator, talking all over the original dialogue. or something like that.
and now I'm not even sure there ever was a DVD in widescreen. I must have been imagining things again. goddammit, why is it so hard to get the full picture on this stuff

Captain Oats wrote: Not at all. Aw, why not? Admittedly, it was definitely a lot stronger as a character drama than a social one (the scene with the Catholic priest strawman was basically Bad Screenwriting 101), but the character stuff was still just so strong at times (like the Willoughby's first letter to his wife, whew), that I couldn't help but get really into it. Not quite as the critics overall did, yes, but still.

Re: Night and Day: The Upgrades and Leaks Awareness Thread
update on my Dark Eyes search. now I'm wondering if it was shot in 4:3 (as many Russian movies at the time were shot this way) and then cropped to 1.85:1 for theatrical release making all the DVDs open matte. or at least these screenshots suggest as much.
