nice to see someone else overrate Bells and underrate The Pirate like I do but the Two Weeks positioning calls THIS ALL INTO QUESTION1!!!

Post Re: Lists Lists Lists

Though I lurk every day I've not posted in a while, but it's time for me to once again shamelessly promote my write-up on my favorite films of the previous year.
https://cinematicheavenandhell.wordpres ... in-review/

As always, mostly American mainstream stuff, and not the best writing out there, but I'm content and it is what it is. And it has the pretties banners I've been able to do so far.

Counted, and I've seen only 67. So, I decided to pick three from the top 25 to watch today:

City Lights
The Searchers
McCabe & Mrs. Miller

Best film about a painter?

Image

Not only does it do a lot of clever things visually, telling a plausible story through characters/symbolism/tableaux taken from his art, but it has a real feel for painting – demonstrating undercoats and layers, the process.

Yeah, it's definitely a great and unique portrait of an artist. Though the reproductions of his paintings look a bit garish at times. What can you do, though, I suppose?

Three great documentaries on painters from great directors that I forgot:

Dong (Jia Zhangke, 2006)
The Artist and the City (Manoel de Oliveira, 1956)
Lucebert, Time and Farewell (Johan van der Keuken, 1994)
